Sidewalks and Crosswalks

City Ordinance 34-59 requires property owners to keep sidewalks and crosswalk approaches free of snow and ice during the winter season to maintain safe conditions for pedestrians.

Did you know?  The Operations Division maintains a stockpile of sand throughout the winter months (November - March) that is available to City residents at Dawson Field (920 Beloit Ave, Janesville) at no charge.  Bring your own container and shovel to help yourself.

Fire Hydrants

The Fire Department asks all residents to make sure a large area is shoveled around any nearby fire hydrants. In case of a fire emergency, having the hydrants easily visible and clear saves time and allows the firefighters to begin their work more quickly.

Storm Sewer Inlets

Residents can help by clearing packed snow and ice from the area around storm sewer inlets. This will help water from melting snow and ice get to the storm sewer and out of the street and gutter.  This is particularly important during the freeze/thaw cycles of the spring when snow and ice melts and refreezes in driveway approaches and on the street, creating hazardous conditions.

Reflectors

Certain roadway conditions and structures can present problems during and following snow plowing operations.  Residents are encouraged to place stakes or reflectors at the following locations to assist plow crews:

• Curves in the road can be difficult to identify and snow may not get pushed back to the curb at these locations.
• Catch basins in the street can be difficult to locate and clear of snow following a plowing event.
• Fire hydrants can often get covered with snow and are not visible to plow operators who push snow onto the terrace. 

Plowing or Placing Snow in Public Streets & Alleys

City Ordinance 34-343 prohibits depositing snow from a sidewalk, driveway or driveway approach onto a City street or alley. The violation that most frequently occurs is when snow from a driveway or parking lot is pushed across the street from the parking lot entrance or driveway and piled on the opposite side of the street either on the terrace or in the street.

Placing snow from a parking lot, driveway, or sidewalk into the street creates a safety hazard for motorists and City snow removal operators. Having to remove or maneuver around these large piles of snow also impacts the efficiency of snow removal operations.
