Summary of Services
The Janesville Water Utility provides an abundant supply of high-quality water for Janesville residents, businesses and industries. Water is also provided for fire protection. The utility's eight wells and pumping equipment can produce 32 million gallons of water per day.
The water supply for the City of Janesville includes the operation and maintenance of eight wells, three booster stations, two water storage reservoirs and one elevated tower.
Average daily water usage is about 10 million gallons with a maximum recorded daily demand of 25.8 million gallons. Disinfection and chemical treatment are provided at each pumping station by the addition of chlorine and fluoride. Water samples are collected and tested daily, and the results are transmitted to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources monthly.
The water distribution system consists of a network of over 371 miles of water mains. These water mains are of sufficient size to provide for fire protection purposes. Activities such as repairing water mains and services, and maintaining valves and hydrants are necessary to support the distribution system. Customer services activities include responding to low water pressure complaints, raising and lowering stop boxes, installing new water meters, and thawing frozen services and meters. Other services include shutting off water to allow plumbing repairs and making seasonal water service connections. Emergency maintenance service is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Each quarter water meter readers record readings from over 22,900 meters. The consumption recorded on the water meters is used to establish water and wastewater charges for the majority of the customers.
The Water Utility gives tours of their facilities to interested groups or organizations. For additional information on the tour program and to schedule a visit, contact the Water Utility.
