Overview

The City of Janesville performs anti-icing as part of its snow and ice control operations.

  • Anti-icing is a proactive snow and ice control activity where a liquid chemical is applied to pavement prior to a winter weather event or when frost conditions are expected.
  • The purpose of this program is to reduce the risk of traffic accidents resulting from slick pavement particularly in frost situations and during minor snow events.
  • This program targets the downtown area, arterial streets, bridge decks, hills, and sharp curves throughout the City.

Dependent on the weather conditions and temperatures, one of two different mixtures are applied to the pavement:

  • Salt Brine
  • Geomelt55® and Salt Brine

As the liquid anti-icing chemical dries, it adheres to the pavement and its melting properties remain intact. As a result, bonding of snow and ice to pavement is minimized or prevented, providing better traction during winter weather events and promoting more rapid clearing of the pavement after plowing.

The photo above shows an anti-icing operation in progress in downtown Janesville. The liquid chemical is sprayed from many locations on the rear of the truck. Drivers are asked to maintain a safe distance behind equipment that is applying anti-icing liquids. The anti-icing products will not permanently stain cars or the pavement.
