Overview
Crack sealing is performed as a means of extending the life of asphalt and concrete pavements in a cost-effective manner.
- Crack sealing consists of the filling of small to moderately sized cracks in pavement with hot, liquid, rubberized asphalt material. This will "seal" the cracks in the surface of the road and reduce the amount of moisture that enters the base and sub-base layers.
- Water that enters cracks and crevices in the pavement can wear away pavement and material under the road, which in turn will lead to severe cracking, "alligatoring," or potholes.
- The flexible, rubberized sealant will move with the pavement as it expands and contracts with seasonal temperature changes.
Annually, the City identifies 7 - 10 miles of streets that are ideal candidates for crack sealing. The Operations Division will coordinate the hiring of an experienced contractor to perform the work.
