Are maps and photos of Janesville available to purchase?
Most mapping information can be obtained by using the City of Janesville’s interactive web mapping GIS (Geographic Information System) website for the general public that allows users to view geographic data/aerial photos, search for properties, view assessment data, floodplain data and zoning information and print maps free of charge from their home or business.
The Planning Division can provide paper copies of the Janesville street map, aerial photographs (black and white from 1956, 1963, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1996 and 2000), floodplain maps, neighborhood plan maps (plans for undeveloped areas in and around Janesville showing locations of new streets, parks and greenbelts), zoning maps and 1985 topographical maps.
What should I know before buying a new home?
The Planning Division reminds you that buying a home also means "buying" into a neighborhood. Home buyers should be aware that the City of Janesville develops and maintains neighborhood plans for most residential areas of the city, particularly in newer subdivisions. If you are planning to buy a home in a new or established neighborhood and the home is located near undeveloped land, a public open space or area situated on a dead-end street, you may want to inquire about what future plans identify for those areas. The Planning Division encourages individuals to check on the following:
- Zoning of the neighborhood and of vacant land or vacant lots near the property. Adjoining properties that are vacant now are likely planned to be developed for a future use which may include a single family residence, a duplex, an apartment building or a commercial or industrial use.
- Planned future street extensions. Dead end streets are most often temporary and planned to be extended in the future.
- Plans for sidewalks, street widening, park improvements, bike trail extensions and greenbelts and drainage improvements.
- Floodplain and geographical information.
The Planning Division is on the third floor of the Janesville City Hall at 18 N. Jackson Street, and is open weekdays 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
