In November of 2013, the City of Janesville was designated a Bird City Community through the Bird City Wisconsin organization!
The mission of Bird City Wisconsin is "Making our communities healthy for birds...and people". The local goal is to increase the healthy habitat for birds and to decrease the hazards they face. In ratifying the application, the Janesville City Council also designated the second Saturday in May each year as World Migratory Bird Day. The Bird City planning team will gear up annually in January to organize a Bird Festival in May. (Ideas and assistance are always welcomed.)
Janesville Parks would like to thank the local volunteers that made this designation possible by compiling the application materials and donating funds for the application fee. For more information on Janesville Bird City efforts, please contact Bird City Committee organizers Neil Deupree at deupreen@charter.net, (608) 752-8342.
Other community partners include: Sustainable Janesville Committee, League of Women Voters Sustainability Work Group, Friends of Rockport Park, Rock Trail Coalition, Green-Rock Audubon Society, Janesville Urban Forest Alliance, Rotary Botanical Gardens, Rock County Conservationists, Ned Hollister Bird Club, and Friends of Riverside Park.
