The Operations Division plays a major role in the Stormwater Utility. Operations staff clean and maintain the City of Janesville's stormwater system infrastructure, which includes storm sewers, catch basins (intakes), stormwater manholes, detention/retention basins, and the City's extensive Greenbelt system. 

Greenbelt Maintenance 

A large portion of the maintenance work to the City of Janesville's Greenbelt system is performed by Operations Division and Parks Division staff, under the direction of the City's stormwater engineers. 

The primary focus of the Greenbelt maintenance is to remove invasive trees and shrubs, to restore eroded areas, and to perform scheduled and supervised burning of prairie grasses.

"Only Rain Goes Down a Storm Sewer Drain"

Unlike water that flows through the City's sanitary sewers, water in a storm sewer is never treated.  Water from the City's storm water system ultimately flows into our waterways, bringing any contaminants it picks up on the way.  Only rain water should flow through a storm sewer! 

Each year, storm sewers back up and cause flooding in the City of Janesville due to blockage by material such as grass clippings, leaves, yard waste, and garbage.  

• Do not place grass, grass clippings, or other lawn debris in the gutter or street at any time.  This activity is prohibited by City Ordinance 34-341. 
• Do not place leaves in the street prior after October 1st or after loose leaf collection has been completed by City staff. 
  • Leaves should be left on the terrace and not raked into the street until a few days prior to scheduled loose leaf collection to reduce clogging of stormwater catch basins and sewers.
• Do not discard hazardous materials down a storm drain.
