The City’s sidewalk program consists of New Sidewalk and Sidewalk Maintenance. Sidewalks are needed for safe pedestrian transportation throughout the city, as they keep pedestrians out of the street and away from the hazards of traffic. The sidewalk program benefits the City of Janesville and its residents by providing safe pedestrian transportation and by potentially avoiding costly litigation due to injuries resulting from hazardous conditions.

Sidewalk FAQs
What do I do if I receive a sidewalk maintenance notice?
Please read the notice carefully, as it should explain why the City has sent it and what your options are. The City has likely sent the notice in response to a citizen's complaint about non-compliant sidewalk on your block. Both the City and property owners have a responsibility to maintain public sidewalks in a safe condition to certain standards. Tripping on sidewalk edges or slipping on ice injures citizens every year.
The notice includes a response sheet to fill out, sign, and return. If you have any questions, please see the Replacement Sidewalk FAQs.
How do I report a sidewalk that needs to be repaired?
Please contact the Engineering Division at (608) 755-3215 if you notice a hazard on an existing sidewalk.
How do I request a new public sidewalk be installed?
The Engineering Division accepts sidewalk installation requests throughout the year. Requests received by September 1 of a given year can be included on the following year’s sidewalk program if the particular location is approved by the City Council at a public hearing. If approved by the Council, the cost of constructing the sidewalks are specially assessed against the abutting property owners. Each requested location of sidewalk is unique according to the City’s comprehensive sidewalk plan. Please contact the Engineering Division at (608) 755-3160 regarding the correct procedure for requesting a sidewalk at a particular location.
How do I know if I will be required to install new sidewalk?
City Ordinances require sidewalk to be constructed on both sides of all new streets in all new developments where a plat, CSM or other division of land has been approved by the City. The Citywide PTCP (Pedestrian Transportation Corridor Plan) sidewalk map is posted on the City's website and in the third floor lobby of City Hall. Contact Engineering at (608) 755-3215 with questions.
