Unused medications pose a risk to our community, health, and environment. Medications in pill form make up the bulk of medications commonly disposed. These types of medications are also among the most commonly abused.

The Janesville Police Department has a pill drop box for the convenient disposal of unwanted prescription pills. All other medications need to be turned in at a staffed collection event.

To maximize volume and reduce labor, the pill drop box accepts only prescription pills, tablets, and capsules. All pill bottles and packaging need to be disposed of by the owner. It’s recommended that all personal information be removed from the packaging prior to disposal by recycling or normal garbage pick up. The Janesville Police Department offers several options to assist in the disposal of these substances.

Disposal Options:

  • 24 Hour Prescription Pill Disposal

The Janesville Police Department has a convenient 24 hour pill drop box.  This is located inside the front door of the police department.  This is for the disposal of prescription pills, tablets and capsules only.  No liquids, patches, needles, or inhalers are accepted by this device.

  • Janesville "Take Back" Events

The Janesville Police Department periodically conducts take back events.  All types of medications can be disposed at these events.  "Like" us on Facebook or sign up for Nixle alerts by texting JANESVILLEPD to 888777 to hear about upcoming events.
