What is the Vacant Building Registration Program?

The City Council passed an Ordinance requiring vacant properties in the City of Janesville to be registered in order to;

  1.  Preserve and promote public health, safety, prosperity, and general welfare
  2.  Abate and prevent public and private nuisances and potential fire hazards
  3. Promote neighborhood stability and occupancy by preserving the condition and appearance of properties
  4. Maintain property values and assessments

 Your Responsibilities as a Vacant Building Owner

  • File a registration form
    • 90 days after a premises becomes vacant
    • 30 days after transfer of ownership
    • 30 days after bank, lender, or other financial institution shall, directly or through an agent or servicing company, initiate foreclosure proceedings by filing a summons and complaint in Rock County Circuit Court upon residential real property.
  • Maintain the interior or exterior in a safe and sanitary manner 

Unless exempt as described in the Janesville Code of Ordinances, the cost to register initially is $200 residential and $350 commercial, with an increase in cost every six-months as long as the property remains vacant.
