Historic District Markers Project Public Forum

The Janesville Historic Commission has announced the launch of a multi-year project to purchase and install decorative markers to identify the nine distinct residential historic districts in the city. The markers, locally sourced, would be purchased and installed at no cost to the City’s taxpayers, relying instead on a public fundraising campaign.

“The Historic Commission has been developing this project for the past several years,” said Historic Commission Member Tim Maahs. “These markers will enhance tourism and promote economic development and neighborhood pride.”

To launch the project, the Janesville Historic Commission will host a public forum on Tuesday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m., at Hedberg Public Library in Janesville. At the forum, the public will be able to learn about the project, its timeline, and will have the opportunity to ask questions about the effort.

The markers are circular in shape and will be mounted on poles to designate the different historic districts in the city. The markers will be located within the public terrace, primarily at main entrances to each district. A sample marker will also be on hand at the forum for the public to view.

There are nine residential historic districts in Janesville and each will be part of this project:

  • Benton Avenue
  • Columbus Circle
  • Courthouse Hill
  • Look West
  • Prospect Hill
  • Bostwick Avenue
  • Conrad Cottages
  • Jefferson Avenue
  • Old Fourth Ward
The historic district markers program may be extended to the community’s four commercial historic districts at a later date. Janesville’s commercial historic districts are as follows: North Main Street, South Main Street, East Milwaukee Street, and West Milwaukee Street.

“We believe this is a unique opportunity to highlight some terrific neighborhoods with architectural gems that have grown with the city,” added Tim Maahs. “We look forward to sharing this project with the public and hope the people of Janesville will appreciate and support this program.”
