The City of Janesville currently consists of 2,606 public fire hydrants. The City of Janesville’s Water Utility flushes and inspects all public fire hydrants annually as part of its preventative maintenance program. This is done to ensure that:
- The hydrants operate properly for fire protection.
- The water does not become stagnant.
- The hydrants are properly drained before the freezing winter weather arrives.
Water Utility typically flushes these hydrants in October and early November. Crews will begin flushing hydrants on October 5. The majority of this activity is scheduled to be performed on weekdays within the hours of 7am to 3pm.
Customers may experience temporary pressure fluctuations or discolored water from the flushing activities. Discoloration is due to mineral and sediment deposits - mainly iron deposits that are flushed from the pipe. If you experience discolored water, run the cold water in your bathtub for several minutes to clear your plumbing. It is recommended to ensure that the water is clear before doing laundry. If water pressure or volume seems low after flushing has been completed, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.
If the water does not clear after following these steps, or for questions, please call Water Utility at 755-3115.
