On April 11 from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Janesville Transit will host an open house for riders and the public to share feedback concerning proposed bus stop locations. During the open house attendees will be able to view updated JTS regular route maps that depict the proposed locations for JTS bus stop signs. Having a defined set of signed bus stop locations is critical as Janesville Transit transitions to a bus stop only transit system in July 2018. Staff will be on hand to accept comments and answer questions; light refreshments will be served. 

A bus stop only transit system is one in which riders must be located at a signed bus stop for pick up or drop off. The bus stop only mode of operation is extremely common throughout transit systems in the United States and will increase route efficiency; increase safety by reducing driver distractions and improve JTS communication with riders. Currently JTS uses a flag stop mode of operation in which customer may be picked up or dropped off at any safe intersection along the fixed bus routes whether the stop is signed or not. 

Every five years JTS and the city Planning Division work together, along with a consultant, to update the JTS Transit Development Plan. This plan sets the overall direction for the Transit System for the coming half-decade. The process to develop the plan included collection of data, stakeholder interviews, a survey of bus riders and the general population, analysis of bus operations, and public input throughout the process. This process included a review of all regular routes and made recommendations for route improvements.  Also included was a review of the feasibility of transitioning to a bus stop only transit system and updating the design of the JTS bus stop sign.  The plan update was completed in 2017 and JTS is underway with preparing to implement changes in July 2018.
